Peter Cooper's Wine Tasting Notes
The excellent wine tasting notes from Peter's session
last December are below.
Surani Costarossa 2015 Primitivo di Manduria
Origin: Primitivo is a grape indigenous to
Italy and the eastern Mediterranean, now more commonly known as Zinfandel.
This wine is made by over-ripening the grapes on the vine, then harvesting
and fermenting them over a lengthy 20 days, then oak-ageing to create
a rich style.
Taste: Deep, dense ruby in colour, with a
nose of warm prunes, dates and figs, with hints of sweet spice. Full and
voluptuous, the mouth-feel is soft and plush, with toasty notes that linger
on the finish. Try with venison, or pan-fried calves' liver.
Valpolicella Classico 2015 Cantina di Negrar
Origin: Produced east of Lake Garda in the
western Veneto region of Verona, northeast Italy. Negrar's vineyards,
sited at the heart of the 'Classico' or traditional producing area, are
planted with Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grape varieties.
Taste: Juicy red berries and red fruit aromas
explode from the glass accompanied by summer berries, exotic spices and
a hint of earth. Seductive, smooth yet full body lingers on the palate
with a velvety finish. Enjoyed with pasta, salumi, soft and semi-soft
cheese, grilled meats and olives. Enjoyable now or over the next three
Rioja Reserva Viña Ardanza 2007
La Rioja Alta £17.98
Origin: One of the very best of Rioja's produced
from fruit exclusively grown in the bodega's 360 hectare vineyard holdings
in the Rioja Alta region, and named after one of the Region's founding
families. Remaining under family ownership, this is of the most sought-after
Grape: Tempranillo, Garnacha
Taste: Complex and perfumed primary and secondary
aromas of earth, spice and red fruits with a long, elegantly structured
medium weight body of spicy tannins and layers of flavour. Enjoy over
the next decade as the richness and power will soften to spice and earth,
augmenting game casserole or wild duck.
Balfour 1503 Brut NV England £19.99
Origin: Superb quality English sparkling
wine from the Hush Heath Estate in Kent, which was planted with vines
in 2002. Winemakers Owen Elias and Victoria Ash have been making wine
at the estate since 2010, and create 1503 Brut using traditional secondary
fermentation in bottle.
Grape: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier
Taste: Refined in structure, with a finely
beaded mousse and pale pink highlights. Tightly structured, combining
crisp apple and citrus fruit with nuances of pepper and thyme. Enjoy immediately.
Best with light seafood.
Santa Ema Sauvignon Gris 2015 £7.99
Origin: Sauvignon Gris is a sibling of the
much more famous Sauvignon Blanc and shares many characteristics.
Taste: The wine tends to be richer and fuller
as this well flavoured example shows with loads of tropical mango and
melon flavours and a long crisp, refreshing finish.
